Steps to Becoming Certified.

 Potential educators must:
 (This is a general overview of the elements required for
certification. You will find specific instructions as well as forms needed in
CAPPA Academy. )
 
First steps in the certification process:     
-Complete the Pre-Training Assignment and return to your faculty member per her instructions.
 -Register for and attend a CAPPA Childbirth Educator training (proof required). 

Next steps in the certification process: 
These steps can begin prior to the training or they can be
completed after attending a CAPPA Childbirth Educator training. 

-Become a member of CAPPA 
-Enter the program by enrolling in CAPPA Academy. Be sure you enroll in the
CAPPA Academy: CCCE Traditional Program.
  *Please register for an in-person training and wait for confirmation the training will be held prior to enrolling in CAPPA Academy. 
-Read 7 books from the CAPPA Childbirth Educator required reading list 

After attending your in-person Childbirth Educator
Training:
-
Read the CAPPA Childbirth Educator Training Manual (provided at training).
-Complete and submit a Local Resources List.
-Observe an approved childbirth education series instructed by a certified educator with CAPPA, Lamaze, or ICEA. 
-Order, read, and complete all the online content from Understanding Breastfeeding, Understanding Labor, and Mother and Baby Care ​books.
-Observe two births totaling at least 10 hours: only one birth may be by cesarean. 
-Pass the multiple choice exam in CAPPA Academy with an 85% or better. 
-Pass the long answer exam in CAPPA Academy. This is a pass/fail test.
-Teach a minimum of 1 hour, observed by an approved educator. (CAPPA, LAMAZE, or ICEA)
-Sign and agree to all CAPPA Policies provided in CAPPA Academy which include the CAPPA Code of Conduct, Scope of Practice, Vision, Mission, Philosophy, and Grievance Policies.
-Save all the above paperwork and submit only once. 
 
Final Steps to Traditional Certification:
-Place all completed certification paperwork in one large envelope and mail to
  CAPPA
.
-Make sure your CAPPA Membership is current. All CAPPA certified professionals are required to maintain continuous membership. A lapse in your CAPPA membership will result reinstatement fees in addition to overdue membership fees. 
-CAPPA certification candidates must be at least 18 years of age.

*The above information is for the traditional route. There is a dual certification and accelerated route to certification. The accelerated route must be pre-approved. See details here.
